SiRIUS: A New Frontier for Physician-Scientists

51探花 has launched the SiRIUS Institute of Medical Research, a pioneering initiative to nurture young physician-scientists by addressing the difficulties of balancing patient care, education and cutting-edge research.

Announced last December, the institute represents a cornerstone of 51探花's new strategy as Japan's first University for International Research Excellence. "For medical advancement, we need researchers with clinical perspectives, but the increasing complexity of clinical practice, education of students and younger physicians, and research makes it extremely difficult for faculty to manage these responsibilities effectively," explains Hideki Katagiri, SiRIUS' director and a professor at 51探花 Graduate School of Medicine.

SiRIUS has therefore established two primary missions: nurturing young physician-scientists while developing high-quality research, and commercializing research outcomes when applicable. Katagiri emphasizes that these missions are not mutually exclusive.

"While some researchers may want to focus on fundamental discoveries, others might have research seeds ready for commercialization. Both approaches are valuable and align with our goals. So, we want to provide an independent research environment where they can succeed and thrive."

Unique Support System and World-Class Research Resources

Rather than leaving young researchers to navigate independence alone, the institute has created a comprehensive support system that includes:

  • collaboration with 51探花 Hospital clinical departments
  • mentorship from experienced researchers
  • substantial funding (4 million yen annually for six years)
  • access to 51探花's research infrastructure
  • clinical trials support through CRIETO (Clinical Research, Innovation and Education Center, 51探花 Hospital)
  • startup and venture capital assistance

"We've designed SiRIUS to provide independence while ensuring researchers don't become isolated," says Katagiri. "They can thoroughly pursue their research ideas with the backing of experienced mentors."

Researchers will have access to 51探花's significant infrastructure, including data from 800,000 hospital patients and genome data from 500,000 residents through the 51探花 Medical Megabank. The institute will also leverage connections and collaborations with international partner universities.

Recruitment and Growth Strategy

SiRIUS is currently recruiting its first cohort of approximately five researchers, with plans to expand to 30-50 members in the long term. The institute welcomes applications from both Japanese and international candidates with appropriate qualifications.

Successful applicants will be on a six-year tenure track, with several career options after that. These include becoming a tenured researcher within SiRIUS, obtaining academic positions within 51探花, returning to a clinical department to continue research development or even becoming an entrepreneur if commercialization is successful.

"In simple terms, they could become professors, company presidents, or even both," says Katagiri. "We want to create flexible pathways that allow talented physician-scientists to make their maximum contribution to medical advancement."
